UPDATE - APRIL 1, 2020 - WE WERE SUPPOSED TO BE VOTING IN PERSON ON OUR NAME CHANGE STARTING APRIL 5.  OBVISOUSLY WE WON'T BE MEETING IN PERSON, SO WE WILL NOT BE VOTING ON APRIL 5.  GIVEN THE UNCERTAINTY OF WHEN WE WILL BE ABLE TO MEET AGAIN, THE LEADERSHIP TEAM AT THE CHURCH WILL BE WORKING TO DETERMINE THE BEST WAY FOR US TO MOVE FORWARD WITH THIS.  WE WILL KEEP YOU UP TO DATE IN THIS REGARD.  THANKS.

For the last several weeks, I have been engaging with our church family... seeking feedback on our proposed name change to Refinery Church.  Thank you for the face-to-face conversations, telephone conversations, and e-mail messages.  I have enjoyed hearing from almost everyone in the church family.

The response from our church family has provided the Leadership Team with an overwhelming indication that we should move forward with a vote on the name change.

WHEN WILL WE BE VOTING?
In an attempt to accommodate as many as possible, we will be holding the vote during the week of April 5-12, 2020.  This means that you can cast your vote on Sunday, April 5 or Sunday, April 12.  If you are not available to vote on either of those two days, you can vote at the church office during that week.  We ask that you contact the office at (780) 462-5233 to ensure staff will be on hand.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO VOTE?
Those who are members of the church are eligible to vote.  Our bylaws define membership this way:
Membership requires a conscious decision on the part of an individual to be actively committed to the health and direction of Christ’s Church of the Meadows as a Biblical community. Any individual may become a member of Christ’s Church of the Meadows if they have publicly acknowledged Jesus Christ as the Son of God, repented of sin, invited Christ to be the Lord of their life, and have been baptized by immersion. As followers of Jesus Christ, members are encouraged and should strive to live a dedicated, committed, and Christ-like life, serving in areas for which they are gifted and regularly setting aside, as God has prospered, financial offerings to support the work of this church family. Members who have not attended weekend worship services for a period of 6 months, and if such absence is not for illness or temporary absence from the community, that member shall be considered a non-member.

With specific regard to voting:  The right to vote shall be limited to members of Christ’s Church of the Meadows who are at least sixteen (16) years of age and have been members for at least three months prior to the meeting.  Voting shall take place at the Annual Meeting or at specially called meetings. Those members in attendance shall constitute a quorum, with no less than a eighty percent (80%) affirmative vote to become effective. Voting by proxy is not permitted.

WHAT IS THE VOTING PROCESS?
Beginning on April 5 at the Welcome Center, each member can pick up their voting envelope with a ballot inside.  On your ballot, you will simply indicate "Yes" or "No" with regards to the name change.  You can discard the envelope, and place your ballot in the ballot box.  Following our Sunday gathering on April 12, the ballots will be counted with the results announced that week by eNews and at our April 19 gathering.

Should the vote land in favor of the name change, we will file an application with the provincial authorities to approve our change.

Let me close by sharing a comment about the vision for this name change, because it is tied to the mission of our church.  The staff and leadership long to see our church grow... to reach lost people and to have a greater impact in our city.  We believe the proposed new name represents a step in this regard.  Personally, I can see a way forward with this new name, and I get excited thinking of the discussion opportunities this name affords and the opportunities for us to promote what God is doing in and through us.
